Artificial intelligence has become a vital presence in our lives, taking on a wide variety of roles from business decisions and medical research to tutoring and companionship. Understanding the ramifications of that powerful societal impact requires an interdisciplinary approach. Although based on advances in computer science, AI needs to be studied not just from a technical perspective, but also in its consequences for human creativity, the arts, commercial practices, and societal change. Approaches and tools from the humanities and social sciences can help analyze and understand the origins and capabilities of AI, its potential for change in individuals and institutions, and the ethics, economics and politics behind the companies creating AI. The goal of the Humanities Research Center's AI Humanities Lab is to bring students, scholars, and community members together to collaboratively examine AI technologies and their multifaceted impact on our lives.
